If you own a VR headset, chances are you’ve played something that made you break a sweat. It’s no secret at all to virtual reality gamers that you’re getting at least a little bit of exercise every time you don a headset. Some games and apps like BoxVR even help you track your performance in the game, but what about games like Beat Saber, Gorn, or Electronauts?
An organization by the name of Virtually Reality Institute of Exercise and Health appears to have dedicated themselves to answering that very question. The first thing you may notice on the front page of their website is mind-blowing statistics surrounding the usage of VR’s highest selling game, Beat Saber.
According to the listed statistics, metabolic testing shows Beat Saber players burn 6.55 calories per minute, which is more than double the calories burned per minute doing sit ups. If that doesn’t catch your interest, they also used the website SteamSpy.com to ascertain the total time Steam VR users have spent playing Beat Saber since May 2018 to be more than 18,530,000 hours, burning a staggering 4,639,374,000 calories. That is equivalent to running around the Earth 1405 times.
They currently give information on calories burned and the type of workout you may receive for 87 VR games and apps, with more being added on a fairly consistent basis.
