SLAM Radio KC – Now Project:SLAM
This change is not an easy one to explain, but basically SLAM Radio in Kansas City lost the name after being “off the air” for 4 years. I will do my best to try and make it simple as there is some serious legal issues that we ran into, and have changed the name and are completely molding into a system that makes more sense.
Last week the staff was notified that in the time that the Kansas City SLAM Radio was down, the name became dormant. In that dormant time the property (the name) known as “SLAM Radio” was trademarked and put into use by another (much larger) broadcasting company. Simply put, the money was not there, plus the risk was too high, to fight for the name that was used prior to do what SLAM Radio KC did before.
The vision of the new SLAM is not anything like the old SLAM. In this new launch there has been game streaming added for example, and the primary form of distribution is audio and video versus only audio streaming in the past. There is also other aspects that are being added that have not been released to date. The studio is in progress of currently being built in Merriam, KS and just like the old movie The Money Pit, the completion date is proposed to be in two weeks from the time of this writing.
The owners of Project Backstage and the people behind SLAM work very close and in some cases are the same people. After a discussion about losing the name, it was decided that we wanted to keep SLAM and continue forward with trying to get it fully launched on the current time table. To do that, what was formerly known as SLAM RADIO KC will now be Project:SLAM and merged into the content of Project Backstage. During this time the audio only streaming has been turned off while we migrate the streaming code to the Project Backstage servers. The audio streams should be functional in the next couple days from this writing. The video streams will fully launch at the completion of the studio.
What does this mean for the future? Nothing different except for a new name and a little more content ability that Project Backstage has provided in the past. Project Backstage has taken down its former website and it is currently being totally rebuilt for the merger of the two. The old Project Backstage content will return as the new design continues to be implemented.
Project:SLAM will continue to strive to support local artists in every way it possibly can, while expanding into the game streaming realm, and other areas (to be announced later) the staff feels could benefit artists. Helping promote up and coming artists remains at the core of our statement with Project:SLAM as it did under the old name.
The entire staff knows this has taken a long time to launch and we have been thrown many curves in this new digital age since the last time the servers were broadcasting. The hope is that this is the last legal hurdle we have to overcome, and that we can light the studio shortly after January 1st, 2020. Our supporters have been amazingly patient and supportive while all of this worked itself out, and the fun is coming very soon. Thank you to everyone that has stuck with what is now known as Project:SLAM as it means the world to everyone working on this. We hope to see you at the studio for the small tour once it is opened.
